In The Actor’s Boot Camp, actors learn how to make weak material work, how to direct themselves and even how to direct their scene partners in an appropriate and non-threatening manner.

The Actor’s Boot Camp covers:

  • Script analysis (from a director’s point of view)
  • Character design and definition (from limited material)
  • Creating objectives and obstacles that enhance the scene
  • Staging and self-staging in order to stimulate your character and others
  • Communication skills with directors and actors that are non-threatening
  • Audition techniques that generate immediate results
  • The Actor/Character Split
  • The Actor/Character Meld
  • The collaborative process between directors, actors and the script

When actors learn to think like directors -- solving problems rather than being crippled by them -- they can take more control of their craft.
Actors will be in groups of 2 or 3 and will work with two different "high-speed directors" on the same scene twice,  preferably on Saturday and Sunday if their schedules permit (please notify host as soon as possible of any scheduling unavailability over the workshop weekend).

A choice of scenes is available on this website ,  including whole scripts.  If self-written material is submitted, it must be a full screenplay with a synopsis (3 pages or so).

Actors must come prepared.  Full screenplay read,  and scene lines learned.

The Mark Travis Tucson Actor Boot Camp scheduled for Sept 11-13 IS CANCELLED  :(

I must announce the cancellation of the Mark Travis Actor BootCamp scheduled for Sept 11-13.  Sadly there were not enough actors and directors ready to participate in the workshop at this time.  I know how disappointed the students will be, how they had made plans, and most of all I am personally disappointed that I cannot have a chance to attend the BootCamp workshop myself.  Payments will be refunded and apologies offered to those who have already signed  up.

In consolation --  we can still meet anyway the Cholla Room at Hotel Arizona the evening of September 11, 2009, 6:00pm to 9:00 pm,  for a
Free workshop rehearsal.  There will be a scene from Notting Hill and we will work on Staging,  Character Work, etc.  This way we can accept Mark's advice in earlier workshops ---  that local Tucson directors and actors get together and practice Mark's techniques ---- in  the newly-minted TUCSON ACTORS WORKSHOP.

Finally, if you missed earlier workshops and want to get a taste of Mark's brilliant technique,  he will be hosting a 3-hour lecture Friday, September 25th, 2009, 4 PM - 7 PM at the Aero Theatre located at 1328 Montana Ave (at 14th Street) in Santa Monica, CA 90403-1710.  The cost is free,  courtesy of the LA Irish Film Festival.  Also, see http://markwtravis.com/ for his schedule of full workshop tour dates.
